Describe
Psychology helps us overcome obstacles by rationally and systematically ratifying our thinking patterns. It empowers us to take control of our behaviour, to define our reality and to promote desirable outcomes. Many of the structures and systems of Psychology struggle to find meaning or purpose in a scientific world where, without a Higher Being, there is essentially no right or wrong way to behave or think about things. Yet Psychologists do their best to rectify whatever behaviour or thinking pattern is perceived to be ‘out of sorts’ – usually identified as something that is detrimental to oneself or one’s community. With the perceived progress in thinking and awareness there is an ever increasing grey area where there is an exceptional lack of awareness or just plain disregard for what is right and what is wrong, for example, despite seemingly condoning modern trends, Psychological studies show the consequences of the lack of father figures in the homes of many African Americans, or the massive increase in gender dysphoria in pro LGBT communities in Sweden, or the loss/theft of identity by individualism, popular culture, mainstream media or cancel-culture.
Explain
The World Health Organization (WHO) considers depression to be the leading cause of disability worldwide, and the number one reason for depression is the loss of identity. When you go to school or college at the start of a new year, you don’t go with the intent to be the loner. Before long you will probably find yourself in a sports team, culture, music or academic club – or at least amongst a group of friends that you identify with and relate to. This is because since the beginning of time human beings have a need to belong. Unfortunately more than ever before pop culture, social and mainstream media are overwhelming individuals with the ever changing bombardment of what is: good, bad, graceful or shameful identities, dictating and teaching individuals how to identify themselves… only to contradict themselves a month later – based on the whims of what will make them (media outlets) a more competitive advertising platform. This in turn causes a monumental hurricane of confusion whether consciously perceived or not. Ontology says that we are ‘what’ or ‘where’ we come from. When someone has a child, the parents have the authority to name that child. The child receives the surname and a combination of traits belonging to their parents. Parents are largely responsible for the first 5-6 years of a child’s development which in many cases will determine to some degree or another what sources will influence a child’s development from 6y onwards, which eventually amalgamates during some of the most important and turbulent times of one’s life – between the ages of 13-21, a stage of development that Erik Erikson determined as the battlefield for identity vs. confusion – whatever the outcome is here, it’s likely to shape the rest of your life.
Predict
With the dawn of the 21st century humanity has advanced leaps and bounds in many ways, some good some bad – all covered under the umbrella of progress. One such field is the awareness of mental health and its significant importance; in many cases it even outweighs physical well being. Yet this knowledge is not being effectively used in decision making, whether in everyday life, businesses or even municipal or governmental policy making. Rather the whims of an indecisive and ever changing moral code dictated by the world, govern policy making. This together with increased disconnectivity with people in real life, the ever degeneration of the family unit, the over-extended hand of globalisation and media platforms, the fact that a scientific or evolutionary theory reduces one’s identity (Ontology) to that of an ape caused by some freak accident as well as a whole myriad of flippant others reasons – human beings are edging ever closer to the age of depression. It may well result in another dark age to be uncovered by historians of the future.
Fortunately there is a golden solution that will never change – the Lord, the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, He that remains the same yesterday today and forever – He will empower you to take control and maximize your potential.
Control
I mentioned before that Ontology says that we are ‘what’ or ‘where’ we come from. While it is true that we come from our parents, with a race, a culture, a language, a community, with a legacy or lack thereof; at the end of the day these things which are very important are finite, as: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” (Jer1:5) “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jer 29:11) So says the Triumphant God, the one and only “I Am.”. The great God has the first and highest authority to define you, he is the giver of your identity and knows you better than you know yourself, (Ps44:21) and you were made to represent God’s own image, He made you male and female, (Gen1:27) He crowned you rulers and gave you dominion over all creation, and He declared you an ambassador of heaven. (Gen 1:28) In a world where empires rise and fall He has given you citizenship to the grandest empire/nation of all time, one that will forever be. He has named you family, co-heirs, royalty, brothers and sisters of Christ Jesus. (Eph 1:4-5) He has given you a tongue – and the Holy Spirit with a unique and special tool of communication through which He empowers you to pour your heart out to Him or to be a channel in bringing heaven to earth. (Rom8: 26-27) He has given most of you eyes to see his creation, ears to hear it, a nose to smell it, a tongue to taste it and skin to feel it – if there should be one of these things that you did not receive or have lost, rest assured, for “we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.” (Rom8:28) Remember there is a purpose: one to prosper you and not to harm you, “and God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.” (2Cor 9:8) Know that your citizenship in His empire/nation is a surety that you will see or hear again in the future. White, yellow, pink, red, brown, black, blue or grey – He has made each of you, not one the same with a unique purpose and role to play. As we have become part of the body of Christ He has in no way called or created a hand to be an eye, or a nose to be a foot, so don’t try to be what you are not. Nor does He intend for you as a hand to compare yourself to the eye or as a nose to compare yourself to a foot. (1Cor12:12-17) You have your unique purpose and calling in His kingdom – one that is a sure foundation that will not be disturbed by whimsical waves of the media or the storms that envelop entire continents, nations or communities. He promises to give you the grace you need, whether it involves finances, strength, energy, joy, patience or endurance to achieve your calling. There is no better foundation to plant your identity, faith and hope in than the one given to you by God.
